Benefits of Vetiver Oil on Skin

August 5, 2017

Vetiver is a grass from the Poaceae family of plants, scientifically called Chrysopogon zizanioides. In India, it’s called “khus,” where it grows naturally, but today it’s also widely produced in Haiti, Java, Japan and Philippines.  A fast-growing perennial, it can survive up to 50 years or more, as all those green leaves are supported by a vast network of underground, interlinked roots that grow vertically, not horizontally, about 12 feet into the soil. These roots are what we use to get Vetiver essential oil.

Vetiver is found in clumps reaching up to five feet high, and can form a green hedge that can trap crop residues and silts to form an earth embankment. This trapping property also makes the plant helpful in growing crops, as it can absorb toxic substances in chemical fertilizers and pesticides, improving the health of the soil.

The root system enables the plant to store water and moisture, but because it expands mostly vertically, it doesn’t encroach on the roots of other plants. The leaves have been used for roof thatching, as raw material for making paper, for mulching, as planting material for mushroom cultures and for making compost, and to make things like ropes, mats, baskets, and more. The roots, in addition to being the source material for the essential oil, are also used for making screens and blinds, and in insect and rodent repellents.

Benefits to the Skin

Vetiver oil is Cicatrisant (healing) because of its ability to lift scars and heal wounds by replacing the damaged skin cells with new healthy cells. It's also anti-aging oil and effectively treats stretch marks, cracks and other skin disorders. Plus, it works as a home remedy for burn relief as well as a home remedy for acne. The most exciting benefit of this plant is its ability to reduce the appearance of dark spots, and other marks on the skin, helping to create a more even skin tone.

Moisturization: Vetiver oil is nourishing and hydrating, helping to soothe dry skin.

Tighten and Firm: Vetiver oil helps skin appear firmer and more youthful.

Skin Protection: Like most plant oils, Vetiver oil contains antioxidants, which helps to protect skin from environmental stressors.

Acne Treatment: Vetiver oil is a natural antiseptic making it a great addition to your regular cleansing routine. Vetiver oil is also antibacterial which means it can remove bacteria that get trapped in our pores leading to blackheads, acne, and cysts.

Skin Inflammation: Vetiver oil reduces external skin inflammation. It reduces the appearance of rashes and skin redness caused due to sun damage. It is also beneficial in severe skin conditions like dryness and flaking caused due to eczema.

Cell Regeneration: Vetiver oil helps in cell regeneration as well. This makes it a very strong anti-aging formula too. It bags the goodness of cicatrisants. Cicatrisants are cell renewing agents that stimulate collagen formation. It also reduces the appearance of age spots, dullness, dryness, acne marks, fine lines and wrinkles. It even offers strength to the connective tissues in the epidermis. The epidermal cells regain their lost elasticity. This results in a youthful and radiant skin that is flawless and well toned.

Lovely Aroma: The aroma of Vetiver oil is a mind calming that improves the mental conditions like anxiety and depression. This therapeutic oil works on spiritual levels by keeping a check on the seven chakras of the human body. This wipes out the existing negativity from the mind and body. The nerves, mind and body, get relaxed with the onset of positivity and mental peace.
